Jewel
Based on how skinny she was and her difficulty walking, an immediate vet trip was in order, so she was whisked off to the vet. The sight of this dog brought the staff to tears. Other than being skinny, having sores from scratching at her flea infested body, having thin hair, being prematurely gray and being HW+, she appears to be in good health (i.e., she will be able to overcome all her maladies). The vet thought she was 2-3 yrs old. Her back is 3-4 inches across at its narrowest. Her nipples hang more than 4 inches from her body. How sad is that her nipples are longer that her back is wide? She weighs approximately 40 lbs. The vet said she must have “heavy” bones. She needs to gain about 15 lbs and will then be ready for HW treatment. After her HW treatment, she will need to be spayed. She is as sweet as she can be. She immediately gave kisses and her little tail wags for both of her foster mom's kids. She has happily gobbled up the small, frequent portions of food she has been given. She has also enjoyed the water. We have named her Jewel, as she is a diamond in the rough. Several of our regular foster parents are taking well-earned breaks from fostering, leaving ABR with not enough foster homes. If you have ever considered fostering as a possibility, please take the time and sign up now. Fostering is a great experience, giving our volunteers the opportunity to help save a needy boxer, and to help provide nice boxer pets for folks who love the breed. Our foster parents find it very satisfying and rewarding. While a few of our rescues have had health issues that required long-term foster care, most of our rescues are in foster care only three to six weeks before being placed into their forever homes.
